Some Thoughts on Avatar and Innovation

I finally saw Avatar this week. I thought I’d be one of the last to see it, but after a couple of weeks the huge IMAX theatre was still filled all the way. First about the movie. I’d never seen a movie in IMAX and also not with this kind of 3D technology. I was pretty impressed by it all, but I think the movie itself would have been great without all the effects. In advance I thought it would’ve been more of a tech demo showing off the 3D possibilities, without any real story. While that surely wasn’t true, I’d expect many of the people that were going to see the movie were going for the 3D experience.

And boy, were there many people who went and saw it. It’s a regular box office success. It grossed over $1 billion worldwide in the first month and people have paid $1.6 bln up until today to get in. To put that in perspective, it’s the number two in the list with highest grossing movies ever, behind James Cameron’s previous movie, Titanic, which was released 12 years ago and has turned over $1.8 bln. Another interested statistic is that the whole of the movie industry has resulted in about $10.5 bln in 2009. So Avatar (released December 19th) makes up almost 10% of that. (source Boxofficemojo)

James Cameron has been developing this movie for 12 years. In this period he has seen the movie industry changing and struggling with internet phenomena such as piracy. The revenues have been steadily rising, but still people worried. Then he and others wondered how to get people away from their computer screens and living rooms, into the movie theatres. 3D movies seemed like the answer and heavy investments were made in developing a whole new way of filming. Would these investments have been made if the threat of people watching movies at home hadn’t existed? I doubt it.

Now of course of of the biggest hits of Consumer Electronics Show of this January in Las Vegas was the 3D television, so people can watch 3D movies at home. No doubt 3D movies will get pirated. This doesn’t mean this development has been for nothing. It’s just another step in innovative progress.

The New Retweet Feature, Close But Not Perfect

twitter-scribbleAfter the initial years for Twitter in which they wanted to keep their service as pure or spartan as possible, they have included three big changes in the last couple of months. The first one is lists, which they implemented differently than I expected (I expected a similar way as Friendfeed or Facebook, but the ability to share your lists is pretty nice).

The second one are the retweets and the last one is the geolocation data attached to tweets. It was always possible to add a location to your account and change that information with some Twitter applications, but the new thing is that now you can attach a locaton to any tweet. I don’t immediately use this myself, but it is very interesting for third party apps and services. See my blog post on communicating in real life like the way you do on the internet and in games from April 2008 to see what I mean. This is a Google translated page, but I hope it’s readable.

I’ve said before that the three things I’d like to see added to twitter were comments (or threaded replies), likes and lists (basically I just want Friendfeed with the community of twitter). So I guess two out of those three have been fulfilled. Let me explain. Lists are obviously in place, but I believe the new retweet function are similar to likes. All it does is share it to your followers, without you being able to add anything to it. I think it’s wise to take the “retweeted by” out of the 140 character since that is way to short anyway and we can agree it’s not really primarily a service for text messages anymore.

Some people are confused by the fact that other people’s avatars and tweets whom they aren’t following are now in their timeline, but if you think about before the change other people tweets came into your timeline too. My newspaper, which prints a daily tweet had to rectify yesterday’s tweet because they had the author wrong. Apparently they have trouble figuring it out too.Notification

One other cool thing about the retweets is, when you see them as likes, you can take a look at the most liked ones. And believe it or not, Twitter has already added that to the web interface. Just click on retweets on the right in the menu and you’ll be taken to the tweets that are most retweeted and your retweets and you tweets retweeted by others. The algorithm behind the most retweeted is just not really clear to me yet and it would be nice to have a best of day/week or something.retweetsWell, this ‘short’ blogpost became way too long again, but I’m very curious what you think of the new features and the retweet feature in particular. Selling Secondhand Media in the Digital World

snespk4A couple of days ago a question was raised on Friendfeed. The issue was what would happen to the pre-owned market of media such as movies, games and music when they are all digital in the future. This is of course assuming that digital downloads will replace all physical media.

First of all I don’t think all physical media will disappear, just as much as there are still vinyl records being sold and retro videogames. Collectors always want to have the physical product to have in ther hands and put in a display. I do think however that most of the mainstream sales of media will become digital. Steam, the games distribution channel of Valve is an excellent example of how this could and should work. In it you only need to enter your bought product key and it will register the game to you. You then can download the game and play. When you login on another computer the game is still registered to you and you can download and install it again. Downloading is a bit slow though, maybe they should have used some bittorrent solution. That would have made the system a lot cheaper for them too.

But on the trading of second-hand games, movies and music, I think there are two sides to it. On one hand you should be able to sell your old games and stuff. That currently is one of the best ways to get cool games for a low price and have been for a long time. You also want to swap with your friends. On the other hand this seems a little bit silly with a digital product. Why would it disappear from you computer only because it has now also gone to your friends computer. And maybe the most important point. To create and maintain such a system there needs to be some sort of digital rights system in place which we have some pretty bad experiences with.

Your very own democratic news site

democraticIt are difficult times for newspapers. First the internet has taken over the function of marketplace and joblist from them and people went online for their news and opinion pieces. And now advertisers loose interest because there are less readers and these companies have less advertising budget. It’s hard to say what the future will look like for newspapers. It’s undeniable though that the need for news is only growing, so it is being suggested that newspapers should focus a bit more on the “news” and a less on the “paper”.

Online the motto should change from “All the news that’s fit to print” (since 1896 the NY Times‘ motto) to “All the news that’s fit to link”. In what way will you find and display the interesting pieces of news and articles? How the online content is created is another story and out of reach of this piece. Dave Winer, webpioneer and developer is always experimenting with new things and very interested in the future of newspapers and news.

He has made a personal newspage with a list of links to articles. These links are shared on his twitter page where people can click on them. The links are shortened with the service of tr.im which enables Dave to see their clickcount. The list is ranked by the amount of clicks, which creates a democratic news site. It’s true that the subjects are picked by Dave, but the clickcount determines where each article stands.

Some of his other experiments are also interesting. He started 100twt, a page with the tweets of the 100 most followed twitterers. I think that mostly was to show that these are not the most active or interesting people on twitter. A good example is Oprah who still ocassionaly updates, but her latest interaction is from april 25th. And even that wasn’t with a fan, but with Hugh Jackman. Also included in 100twt are pages of the people working at Twitter and the NY Times. This way you can see how the company deals with the medium itself and how reporters use it.

Another way to use a similar system is Friendfeed. It’s not only possible to use the very extended search feature to find the most discussed and interesting entries of certain friends or topics, but it’s also possible to view a page with the “Best of Day” entries from your contacts that have received the most “likes” or “comments”. I like these experiments to discover interesting news and articles!

Nieuwe oude media. Een lesje in TV-maken?

Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show is een talkshow waarin Kevin Pollak, een hollywoodster bekend van o.a. The Usual Suspects, allerlei bekende mensen interviewt over hun passies en projecten. Het betreft tot nu toe vooral collega acteurs en anderen uit de showbusiness, maar ook Elon Musk, CEO van Tesla Motors is te gast geweest. Ze zitten aan een grote tafel en af en toe wordt er een stukje van de nieuwste film getoond of wordt het nieuwgeschreven boek omhoog gehouden.

Tot zover de standaardingrediënten van een ouderwetse talkshow. Bijzonder aan de show is namelijk dat het zich verder volledig op internet afspeelt en goedkoop en onafhankelijk is geproduceerd. Pollak heeft zich een tijdje geleden door Jason Calacanis laten overhalen te gaan twitteren (@kevinpollak) Dit leverde hem al vlug meer dan 100 duizend volgers op en zijn interesse voor nieuwe internet media was gewekt. Hij liep al een tijdje rond met het idee een talkshow te maken, waarbij er niet in soundbites werd gepraat, maar gasten echt de tijd krijgen hun zegje te doen. Met hulp van Calacanis (als producer) werd voor een kleine 20 duizend dollar een studio in elkaar gezet en de opnames begonnen.

En het werkt. Het leukste aan de show is nog wel het enthousiasme van de host. Hij is zichtbaar onder de indruk van deze nieuwe manier van werken en maakt er ook goed gebruik van. Hij noemt het prettig dat hij rustig eens een scheldwoord of stilte mag laten vallen. Ook hoeft het verder niet zo gepolijst te verlopen. Desondanks is het erg soepel om naar te kijken door Kevin’s jarenlange ervaring als acteur en stand-up comedian. Het heet niet alleen Chat Show omdat er gekletst word met gasten, maar ook omdat je als je live kijkt vragen kunt stellen aan de gasten via de site en de twitter account van Kevin Pollak. (Ook maakt hij tot nu toe bij iedere aflevering aan het begin de grap “Welcome to Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show, my name is Chat Show.) De verspreiding werkt ook via de stream op de website. Helaas is dat voor ons Europeanen om 02.00 zondagavond, maar de afleveringen zijn ook beschikbaar via iTunes en Youtube en natuurlijk ook later te bekijken op kevinpollakschatshow.com.

Er zijn pas vier afleveringen gemaakt, die variëren tussen de anderhalf en twee uur naar gelang hoeveel de host en gasten hebben te vertellen. Het blijft dus afwachten of dit initiatief een lang leven is beschoren, nadat de nieuwigheid van het format eraf is. Toch vind ik wel dat door de kennis en contacten binnen de hollywood acteurswereld er boeiende gasten en gesprekken te zien zijn. Hoe dan ook geeft het wel aan dat je met alleen een goed verhaal, interessante gasten, een camera, website en een tafel en zwart doek je interessante “televisie” kunt maken. (Kevin noemt het “Intervision”, naar interactive television). Wat denk jij?

A newer Friendfeed (and faster en better en prettier)

Friendfeed is a one stop shop for all of your social network and news needs. It exists for about two years now and is steadily growing. When Facebook launched their redesign a couple of weeks ago they had copied a large part of the interface of Friendfeed. Now Friendfeed has got a redesign of its own, which has launched today in beta mode on http://beta.friendfeed.com. After having received feedback from the users they will transfer this design to the main site.

As I said the site is your main hub for all of your online communication needs and this has only improved since today’s redesign. It’s very versatile (it can be used in many ways) and very powerful (you can add an extract a lot of information).

One way of using it is just like twitter, but then with many more possibilities of adding images, videos and links to your messages. So forget about twitpic, mobypicture, powertwitter and other services like URL shorteners and unshorteners, because you can all add it to Friendfeed. Another way of using Friendfeed is by having a great overview of all of your contacts online activity in one place like blogposts, flickr photos, vimeo videos and digg and youtube favorites for example. On the other side it’s a nice way to collect all your own things and display them in a nice centralized way.

But enough introduction. I’m just telling this because I am enthousiastic about it and think Friendfeed could easily replace twitter, facebook, myspace and other social networks. You just have to know how and take some time figuring out the site. To see the new design in action go to http://beta.friendfeed.com. The most interesting changes since today are:

  • All the pages are real-time now. (This can look imposing, but there is a pause button and with the right filters and lists this becomes very usable)
  • You can send contacts direct messages. These are regular posts, but the receiver gets a flag in their received messages list. This is what I was missing to have it replace twitter. I have to give it some more tryout time and of course my twitter contacts have to make the jump)
  • In the design the person from whom something comes is more emphasized than what source it came from.
  • There is a (modest) profile page.
  • Filtering and searching has changed and improved. This requires some more time to figure out and setup, but after a while you can perfectly tune the site to your needs.

There are all sorts of large and small changes, that above all have to make the communication and sharing with your contacts easier. It’s a bit more like a real-time chatroom. For more elaborate reviews go to Techcrunch, Scobleizer, Thomas Hawk and the Friendfeed blog itself. These blogs have already gotten a preview last friday. They had only forgotten to invite yours truly. It’s a disgrace…

Last.fm niet meer gratis

Gisteren deed Last.fm een mededeling, namelijk dat gebruikers buiten de USA, Groot-Brittannië en Duitsland 3,00 euro per maand moeten gaan betalen als ze van de streaming muziek service gebruik willen blijven maken. Dit betekent dat je dan van de streaming radiostations gebruik kunt blijven maken, waar je op basis van een tag of een artiest “geshuffelde” nummers te horen krijgt. Andere diensten zoals het scrobblen (de software laten bijhouden waar je op je computer en mp3speler naar luistert) en de muziek- en artiestendatabase blijven gratis.

Ik zou geen 3,00 euro betalen

Het is last.fm toe nu toe altijd wel gelukt om deze dienst gratis aan te bieden en tegelijk de artiesten te blijven betalen. Dit is van belang omdat dit blijkbaar een werkend businessmodel was. De (labels van de) artiesten vroegen zo weinig geld dat dat vol te houden was op basis van advertentie inkomsten. Dat is nu blijkbaar veranderd maar, ik denk dat er niet veel mensen bereid zijn 3,00 euro te betalen voor de radiostations. Ik niet in ieder geval. Ik gebruik ze nu al amper, ik gebruik vooral het scrobblen. Bright speculeerde al dat Last.fm misschien deze abonnementen zou samenvoegen met het bestaande abonnement waarbij je 2,50 euro betaalt en dan wat twijfelachtige voordelen krijgt zoals een zwart icoontje om mee te pronken, geen advertenties, zelf te maken playlists die je op shuffle kunt beluisteren, voorrang op de servers en statistieken over wie er op je profiel pagina is geweest.

Ik zou wel betalen als…

Wanneer zou ik dan wel betalen voor last.fm? En hoeveel? Wat het tot nu toe gratis heeft gehouden, en wat ook tot nu toe de grootste beperking is geweest is dat je geen nummers uit kunt kiezen die je wilt luisteren. Je kunt alleen een tag of artiest opgeven of op basis van je eerdere geluisterde muziek een radiostation aanmaken. Ik zou tot wel 7,50 per maand betalen als Last.fm de rol overnam van mijn offline muziekcollectie en er voor zou zorgen dat ik gewoon naar een album of nummer kan luisteren dat ik wil en playlists van a tot z kan afspelen. Graag gecombineerd met alle dingen die nu zo bijzonder zijn aan last.fm zoals de vergelijking met je vrienden en het bijhouden van wat je allemaal geluisterd hebt en de enorme database aan muziek en informatie over de artiesten en optredens. Dan mogen ze van mij zelfs dat zwarte icoontje houden en nog wel wat advertenties laten staan.

@stufidata vertelt je iedere maand wanneer de studiefinanciering onderweg is

Iedere maand maakt de staat weer zijn geld over naar de nederlandse studenten. Je hebt zo van die maanden dat er aan het einde van je geld nog een stukje maand over is. Je zit dan op een houtje te bijten en de dagen af te tellen tot je “stufi” binnen is. De twitteraccount @stufidata die ik onlangs heb aangemaakt geeft je het verlossende woord.
Op de datum die door de IB-groep is bekendgemaakt verstuurd @stufidata een tweet met de mededeling dat het geld onderweg is. Volgens de IBG staat het geld die of de volgende dag het geld op je rekening. Dat is afhankelijk van je bankrekening en ik heb gemerkt dat het bij de Rabobank er vaak die eerste dag al op staat. Vervolgens krijg je de dag erna nog een tweet die verteld wanneer het volgende maand komt. Twee tweets per maand dus.
Ik moet nog even zeggen dat ik verder niets met de IBG te maken heb. Je kunt dus niet met vragen oid. bij mij terecht. Verder wil ik Twuffer nog even bedanken, die het mogelijk maakt tweets vooraf klaar te zetten en er voor gaat zorgen dat het geheel blijft werken. Ik vind het een leuk initiatief en gezien de eerste reacties en volgers wordt het ook wel een succes. Op en aanmerkingen hoor ik natuurlijk graag hieronder of via @stufidata of @tobiasverhoog

This episode of Internet Pranks is about the Fail. This is a simple joke or “meme” in which images are displayed of ironic situations that happened different than intended. These images are logged for instance on my new favorite weblog the Failblog.org. It’s further explained in this Rocketboom video:

Deze aflevering van Internet Pranks gaat over de Fail. Dit is een simpele prank of “meme” waarbij plaatjes worden gezocht van ironische situaties die anders zijn uitgepakt dan de bedoeling was. The Problem

It is the time of the year of writing old fashioned postcards to each other. Especially since e-mail as a daily way of communicating, the holiday season has the annual spike in snailmail usage. Somehow the christmas e-mail never really caught on. I guess it’s just not enough of an effort. And you can’t hang e-mails from the wall. There’re of course  the e-cards, but they are never much more than a dressed up e-mail. And often you have to egister and sometimes even pay. Finally, I haven’t seen many really interesting e-cards.

Allright, all the social networks on the internet (e-mail, e-card, facebook wall message or holiday tweet) haven’t replaced the christmas card. Then we’ll send an oldfashioned paper card. So after you got some nice cards an written some witty texts on them there’s  a problem you’ll encounter. What’s the postal address of the person you wanted to send a card? Maybe you mail and twitter everyday with him or her, or are you checking their facebook wall regularly, but what is the house address? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to keep all your contact information online, with the added possibility of your contact keeping their own information up-to-date and a way to synchronize your data with your cellphone. And of course you should also be able to add people yourself who aren’t connected to this website.

What solutions are there available?

Plaxo

The first website where some might be thinking of is Plaxo. This my public profile. As you can see it’s not very informative. I haven’t added my address information, just like all of my 4 contacts haven’t. So that’s not much use to me. I could take the time to put in the address information if at least I could synchronize the data with my cellphone. I think this isn’t too complicated technically, since there are other website who do this (via SyncML). Furthermore the website of Plaxo isn’t really focused on displaying your contacts in a convenient way and is a bit cluttered. Cellphone synchronisation would get me to use this website. Most of my contacts are already in my cellphone and if I’d add the address information then I’d also have that with me.

Ovi of Nokia. This website by Nokia has launched this year and has some potential. It consist of multiple parts of which an adressbook and a calendar. Next to that there’s a fileshare section and a photoshare site which is a good (free) alternative to Flickr. You can alos use this if you don’t have a Nokia. The addressbook and calendar sync nicely with your cellphone. This can be done wireless or via your PC with Nokia’s Ovi software. This all looks pretty good, but I still miss that your contacts can update their own information and synchrnisation with for instance Googel Contacts and Calendar.

Mobical/Scheduleworld/ZYB – These website or more or less  clones of each other and based on a technique that’s called SyncML. This is also used in smartphones like that by Nokia. I use the website Mobical.net for my Nokia N95 8GB. On these you can, without using a computer, synchronize your contacts and calender and sometimes also photos, videos and notes and tasks. The websites aren’t very user friendly unfortunatly, but they make a good online backup. Scheduleworld looks the best, except that it’s some kind of purple.. Scheduleworld also has the optione of syncing with Google Calendar. But on these website I also miss the feature of your friends updating their own contact information. More examples and informaion in the Wikipedia article on SyncML.

A high potential service is Google Contacts. Earlier Gmail added every emailaddress to your addressbook, which made it full of helpdesk and info@somewebsite.com addresses. But since the update of last summer there’s a real addressbook whereto you can add people yourself from a list of  “suggested contacts”. This is, especially combined with Google Calender, a good way of keeping your contactinformation. Only Google hasn’t added a way of synchronising with your telephone. People could maintain their own information through Google Profile. It’s supposed to work very well together with a cellphone with Google’s operating system Android.

Linkedin is mostly used in the business world for expanding your professional network. Then you can see an overview of the addressinformation they have provided themselves. So they can maintain this themselve as well. The website isn’t very user friendly though and synchronizing with a cellphone isn’t possible. Other social networks like Myspace and Facebook could start something similar ofcourse. Facebook does have a phonebook.

So there are some services with potential. It’s more about whether a website wants to position itself as an addressbook, if it wants to offer this functionailty. Important are also the ways in whoch you synchronize with mobile devices and other web services. So contactinformation can be pulled of different social networks. It would be easier if there was one website which carried everybody’s information. Like an online businesscard. Google Profile for instance. that if you’d register with a new service that you could use that. Still many of these websites aren’t more than a digital version of the old paper addressbook. It’s only going to be innovative and more useful if people maintain their own contactinformation.

Het probleem

Deze tijd van het jaar is altijd de tijd van het ouderwets kaartjes schrijven. Zeker sinds de komst van email als dagelijkse berichtenuitwisseling is de kerstperiode de jaarlijkse piek aan ouderwetse snailmail (papieren “slakkenpost”). Op de een of andere manier is het kerstmailtje nooit aangeslagen. Ik denk dat dat toch overkomt alsof je je er vanaf wilt maken. En je kunt je kerstmailtjes niet leuk op de muur hangen om naar te kijken. Je hebt natuurlijk wel de e-card die je bijvoorbeeld via hyves of boomerang kunt versturen, maar dat is eigenlijk niet meer dan een opgeleukte e-mail. Bovendien moet je je vaak weer registreren en soms zelfs betalen. Ook heb ik zelden echt leuke e-cards gezien.

Goed, alle sociale netwerken op het internet (e-mail, e-card, hyves bericht of feestdagen tweet) hebben dus de kerstkaart nog niet verstoten.  Dan toch maar met de ouderwetse kaartjes aan de slag. Dan loop je al snel tegen een probleem aan. Wat is het adres ook al weer van die persoon die je een kaartje wilt sturen. Misschien mail en twitter je dagelijks met hem of haar, of zit je continu op elkaars hyves of facebook pagina, maar wat is het postadres? Het zou toch prettig zijn om op internet je contacten bij te kunnen houden, met als bonusmogelijkheid dan dat je contacten hun eigen informatie up-to-date houden en dat je de gegevens met je mobieltje kunt synchroniseren. Ook belangrijk is dat van contacten die niet op de site zijn aangesloten je zelf de adressen kunt invullen.

Welke oplossingen zijn er?

Plaxo

Plaxo

Een eerste website waar misschien sommigen al aan dachten is Plaxo. Dit is mijn openbare profiel. Zoals je ziet is het niet erg informatief. Ik heb m’n adresgegevens ook niet toegevoegd, net als eigenlijk al mijn 4 contacten. Hier heb ik dus nog niet zo veel aan.  Ik zou nog wel de moeite willen nemen van al mijn contacten de gegevens in te vullen, als ik tenminste de contactinformatie zou kunnen synchroniseren met mijn telefoon. Dit is technisch volgens mij niet zo heel erg lastig aangezien er wel andere sites zijn die dat doen (via SyncML). Verder is de website van Plaxo nogal onoverzichtelijk en niet vooral gericht op je contacten. Synchroniseren met m’n telefoon zou me wel overhalen dit te gaan gebruiken. In mijn telefoon heb ik immers al de meeste van m’n contacten en als ik daar ook de adressen in heb staan, dan heb ik die altijd bij de hand.

Ovi van Nokia. Deze website van Nokia is dit jaar van start gegaan en heeft wel potentie. Het bestaat uit verschillende onderdelen waaronder een adresboek en kalender. Ook is er een fileshare onderdeel en een fotoboek, dat erg lijkt op Flickr en daar eigenlijk best een goed alternatief voor is. Je kunt je hier ook inschrijven als geen Nokia hebt. Het adresboek en de kalender synchroniseren mooi met de telefoon. Dit kan draadloos via het mobiele internet of je PC met de Ovi software van Nokia. Dit lijkt allemaal vrij goed, maar ik mis nog de mogelijkheid dat anderen hun eigen contactinformatie updaten en het synchroniseren met bijvoorbeeld Google Contacts.

Mobical/Scheduleworld/ZYB – Deze websites zijn min of meer clonen van elkaar en zijn gebaseerd op een techniek die SyncML wordt genoemd. Deze techniek wordt ook gebruikt door smartphones zoals die van Nokia. Ik gebruik zelf voor mijn Nokia N95 8GB de website Mobical.net. Je kunt hier zonder tussenkomst van een computer je contacten, kalender en soms ook foto’s en video’s synchroniseren. De websites zijn vaak alleen niet zo heel gebruiksvriendelijk , maar zijn wel een goede backup van je gegevens online. Scheduleworld ziet er (behalve dat het lila is) tot nu toe het beste uit. Scheduleworld heeft ook de mogelijkheid om te synchroniseren met Google Calender. Echter ook bij deze sites mis ik de mogelijkheden om mensen hun eigen gegevens te updaten.   Meer voorbeelden en informatie in het wikipedia artikel over SyncML.

Een dienst met potentie is Google Contacts. Eerder voegde Gmail ieder emailadres automatisch toe aan je adresboek, wat er toe leidde dat het adresboek vol kwam te staan met info@puntjepuntje.com en helpdesk adressen. Sinds de update van afgelopen zomer is er een echt adresboek waar je zelf mensen aan toe kunt voegen vanuit een lijst met “suggested contacts”. Dit is, zeker in combinatie met Google Calender, een mooie manier om je contacten bij te houden. Alleen heeft Google nog geen synchronisatie mogelijkheden voor je mobiele telefoon ingebouwd. Mensen zouden zelf hun contactgegevens bij kunnen houden, dit kan nu wel via de gegevens van een Google Profile. Het schijnt allemaal wel erg goed samen te werken met een mobiele telefoon waar het besturingssysteem van Google, Android op draait.

Linkedin wordt vooral in de zakelijke wereld als manier gebruikt om je netwerk uit te bouwen. Je kunt vervolgens een overzicht zien van al je contacten en hun adresgegevens zien die ze zelf hebben toegevoegd. Dit kunnen ze ook zelf bijhouden dus. De website is echter niet zo heel overzichtelijk en ook het synchroniseren met de mobiel is niet mogelijk. Andere sociale netwerken zoals Facebook en Hyves zouden natuurlijk dezelfde functies kunnen inbouwen.

Al met al zijn er dus wel diensten met potentie. Het draait er vooral om of een website zich ook als adresboek wil opstellen, of het die mogelijkheden wil instellen voor zijn gebruikers. Belangrijk hierbij zijn ook de mogelijkheden te synchroniseren met andere diensten en apparaten. Zodat adresgegevens van mensen van verschillende netwerken afgeplukt kunnen worden.  Makkelijker zou zijn als er éém dienst overheersend en de algemene standaard zou worden om je adresgegevens en misschien andere informatie op te zetten. Als een online visitekaartje. Bijvoorbeeld Google Profile. Als je je aanmeld bij bijvoorbeeld Facebook zou je dan kunnen invullen dat die gegevens gebruikt kunnen worden. Toch blijven veel van dit soort websites niet veel meer dan een online versie van het aloude adresboekje. Het wordt pas echt vernieuwend en handiger als mensen hun eigen gegevens updaten.

Gebruik jij een dergelijke website om adresgegevens te bewaren of heb je misschien een papieren adresboekje. Misschien bel je wel gewoon de mensen voordat je ze een kaartje stuurt? Laat het weten in de comments. Je kunt ook een berichtje achterlaten als je m’n verhaal wat aan de lange kant vond of misschien wat onbegrijpelijk.
