De onderwerpen waar ik en volgens mij velen met mij het graag over hebben met vrienden zijn boeken, films, games en muziek. Je bent zelf natuurlijk op zoek naar het volgende leuke boek om te lezen of boeiende film om te zien en ook zou je graag weten welke films en boeken je vrienden aanraden. En je raadt het al dat is precies waar blippr voor bedoeld is.
Kort en krachtig
In blippr kun je reviews schrijven, maar ben je gebonden aan dezelfde 160 karakters die een smsje of twitter update hun korte bondigheid geven. Als twitter een microblog is, is blippr het schrijven van micro-reviews. Je kiest eerst uit vier niveau’s van hoe leuk je het vindt en dan schrijf je kort wat je ervan vindt. De simpele opzet van de site is een van de dingen die het zo leuk maken. Als je aan een vriend vraagt wat die van een film vond hoef je ook geen uitgebreide schets van de personages, opbouw van het verhaal, tempo of biografie van de regisseur. Wil je wel meer (objectieve) informatie over een film of boek dan kun je dat op de site ook zien.
Verdere mogelijkheden van de site zijn de optie je profiel te verbinden aan je friendfeed, twitter, jaiku, facebook, plurk of pownce account. Hierbij gaat er automatisch een berichtje naar deze diensten als je een reviewtje geschreven hebt. Blippr heeft zelf ook een status update mogelijkheid, waar je kunt aangeven wat je aan het lezen bent of welke film je net gezien hebt.
Werkt het handig?
De website van blippr is echt een stap verder qua overzichtelijkheid en gebruikgemak ten opzichte van bijvoorbeeld Flixster, dat in mijn ogen toch niet echt boven het gezellige amateur “we maken een website” niveau uit is gekomen. Toch zijn er ook bij blippr wel verbeteringen die ik nog graag zou zien. Ze zijn tenslotte ook nog in beta. Wat ik bij veel websites zou willen hebben is een mobiele website zodat ik makkelijker voor de bioscoop blips kan opzoeken of na de bioscoop direct een film kan blippen. De waardering van een film zou ik graag uitdrukken op een schaal van 1 tot 10 in plaats van de 4 niveau’s die er nu zijn. De hoeveelheid films moet nog wel redelijk uitgebreid worden, bijvoorbeeld zijn er nog geen nederlandse films te vinden en mogen er wel series toegevoegd worden.
Kritische succesfactor blijft toch wel de gemeenschap die de site gaat gebruiken en in het bijzonder of je je vrienden zover krijgt om het ook te gaan gebruiken. Er zijn nog niet heel veel reviews te vinden bij alle onderwerpen, maar als dat groeit zal de dienst ook steeds handiger en leuker worden. Bekijk mijn blips op mijn blippr profiel.

You’re always looking for the next interesting read or nice movie to watch and you’d also like to know what movies or books your friends would advice. Guess what, that’s exactly what blippr is for.
Micro reviews
Blippr allows you to write reviews, but limits you to the same 160 characters that give an SMS or twitter update their compactness. If twitter is a microblog, then blippr is writing micro-reviews. FIrst you select one of four levels of how much you like the reviewed item and then you write a very short review. The simple idea and layout of the site is one of the things that makes it fun. If you ask a friend about a movie, you don’t want a complicated description of the characters, storyline or biography of the director. If you do want more (objective) information about a movie then you can view that on the site as well.
There’s also the possibility to connect your profile to an account of friendfeed, twitter, jaiku, facebook, plurk or pownce. A status message will go out to these services when you’ve written a blip (micro-review). Blippr itself has a status update feature, where you can enter what you’re reading or which movies you’ve just seen.
Does it work?
Blipprs website reallyis a step forward in layout and useability compared to other sites like Flixster, which in my opnion doesn’t really get any further than the amateur “let’s make a website” level. There still are some improvements I’d like to see in blippr. After all they are still in beta. Like many website I’d love to see a specialized mobile website so I can look up blips while standing in front of the cinema or that I can enter blips directly after I’ve seen a movie in the cinema. Maybe they could integrate the microblogging services further and allow blips to be entered via twitter direct messages or just via email. I would like to have rating levels of 1 – 10 instead of only the current 4 levels. The amount of movies still has to be exapnded a lot. For instance there are no dutch movies yet and I’d like to see some series added.
Critical succesfactor remains of course the amount of people who will use the service and in particular whether your friends are willing to use it. There are not many reviews in all of the sections (movies is the biggest, followed by books, games and music), but when those numbers grow, the service will grow in useanility and fun!
