Internet Information Overload? Subscribe to websites using RSS.

The feed of this blogDo you visit blogs or news sites regularly to see if there’s anything new? Then you could make things a lot easier for yourself by using a so called RSS-reader. With an RSS-reader you can subscribe to a website, so every time there’s something new on a site you receive that in your reader. This means that you don’t just get a message in your reader, but also the content itself. This way you don’t have to leave the reader to keep up with your favorite blogs and news sites. I use the website of Google Reader, but you also have offline programs that can read the RSS-feeds (the subscriptions). The advantage of the offline programs is that they can fetch the content so you can read it later when you’re not connected to the internet. The advantage of using a website is that wherever you log in the subscriptions are synchronized and the same. Google Reader also has a mobile website. Below you can see some screenshots of Google Reader on the computer and iPhone (in dutch).

It is a technique that you can explain using a lot of details and technical information, but you don’t really need those to use it to your advantage. Therefor here is the video RSS in plain English.

First of all you need a RSS-reader which you add subscriptions to websites. You can sign in at Google Reader. Then add feeds by 1) copy and pasting these from a website or 2) clicking on the orange icon (which you see on the beginning of this post) and then choosing that you want to add this site to your Google Reader. The address of my feed is http://feeds2.feedburner.com/PersonalTobias. You could copy and paste this in Google Reader using the button “Add subscription” or you could click on it and choose “Google”.

To briefly summarize:

  • You can subscribe to a website using it’s RSS-feed.
  • You can read these feeds using a program or website such as Google Reader.

Now that you have an understanding of RSS and what it can do for you, you need some good sites to fill your reader. These are just some feeds I can recommend:

Magnetic Joe is my favorite game for the iphone or ipod touch

Difficult Joe

I would like to introduce Magnetic Joe. It’s my favorite game on my ipod touch and ofcouse the iphone. Joe is a purple ball who, despite what his name suggests, isn’t magnetic all the time, but only when you press your finger against the glass somewhere. Joe is pulled to the blue magnets that are spread out in the 2D mazes which he has to cross. There are also parts which Joe can’t touch. This results in a simple and addictive game, of which the difficulty level reminds of old games on the NES and 286 pc.

A free iphone game

Other good news is that it’s a completely free game, while it’s a complete app. So it’s not free lite version or a demo, no just more than 40 levels of Joe for free. I’ve got my ipod touch for a while now and I have to say the app store and installing apps works great. But it’s too bad that most of the free apps are just a sample of paid apps. The makers of Magnetic Joe have already made some money on a Nintendo DS version and some other games and it seemed a nice way to them to introduce the game to ipod touch and iphone users. Magnetic Joe 2 and 3 are also being made, but those probably will cost money.

Screenshots of the gameplay

To give you a better idea of the mazes that you have to guide Joe through with your touchscreen, here are some screenshots. Magnetc Joe can be downloaded in Apple’s app store.

Some quick Iphone and Ipod Touch tips

[Dutch below / Nederlands hieronder]

I’ve recently bought an Ipod Touch for myself. A second generation with 32 gb of memory, to be precise. Meanwhile my girlfriend has bought an Iphone, of which the phone contract hasn’t started yet. I’ve gathered some tips while figuring out how this thing works that might be handy for others. Let me know in the comments if you know any more. I’d also like to hear about your favorite app.

  1. Tap the spacebar twice while typing to get a period and a space.
  2. To add special characters quickly press “123″ and while keeping your finger on the glass slide to the character you’d like. The iphone switches keyboards back automatically. Also works for shift.
  3. Read my previous blogpost about adding Hotmail to an iphone or ipod touch.
  4. To add or edit text, press your text for a couple of seconds and a magnifying glass will appear.
  5. Iphone: press the homebutton twice for you favorite contacts.
  6. Ipod touch and iphone while playing music: press the homebutton twice for a pop-up in which you can control your music.
  7. Are you still using you original apple headset (buy some sennheisers for 20 bucks, but okay),  then you can use the plastic piece in te cord  to control your ipod .Click once to start the music, click again to pause. Doubleclick to forward one track and click three times (fast) to ga one track back.
  8. While surfing in Safari, tap the bar on the top with the clock to go back to the beginning of the page. Also works in some other apps.
  9. To delete emails easily while you’re in your inbox, slide right or left on a message header. Tap edit in the upper right corner to delete multiple emails.
  10. Enable caps lock in settings > General > Keyboard. Now dounletap on the shift key for caps lock.
  11. To add a screen capture to your saved photos hold the homebutton and press the sleepbutton on top.

I’ll add any tips that I will come across. Please also add tips you know to the comments!
