Do you visit blogs or news sites regularly to see if there’s anything new? Then you could make things a lot easier for yourself by using a so called RSS-reader. With an RSS-reader you can subscribe to a website, so every time there’s something new on a site you receive that in your reader. This means that you don’t just get a message in your reader, but also the content itself. This way you don’t have to leave the reader to keep up with your favorite blogs and news sites. I use the website of Google Reader, but you also have offline programs that can read the RSS-feeds (the subscriptions). The advantage of the offline programs is that they can fetch the content so you can read it later when you’re not connected to the internet. The advantage of using a website is that wherever you log in the subscriptions are synchronized and the same. Google Reader also has a mobile website. Below you can see some screenshots of Google Reader on the computer and iPhone (in dutch).

It is a technique that you can explain using a lot of details and technical information, but you don’t really need those to use it to your advantage. Therefor here is the video RSS in plain English.
First of all you need a RSS-reader which you add subscriptions to websites. You can sign in at Google Reader. Then add feeds by 1) copy and pasting these from a website or 2) clicking on the orange icon (which you see on the beginning of this post) and then choosing that you want to add this site to your Google Reader. The address of my feed is http://feeds2.feedburner.com/PersonalTobias. You could copy and paste this in Google Reader using the button “Add subscription” or you could click on it and choose “Google”.
To briefly summarize:
- You can subscribe to a website using it’s RSS-feed.
- You can read these feeds using a program or website such as Google Reader.
Now that you have an understanding of RSS and what it can do for you, you need some good sites to fill your reader. These are just some feeds I can recommend:
- Seth Godin’s marketing blog
- Why that’s Delightful with Graham Linehan. A blog by a British TV writer where he collects interesting things.
- Blog of The Next Web
- Dumb Little Man – tips for life
Soon a post on some more advanced RSS possibilities. Do you have any questions on RSS or a favorite blog or site to add. Let us know in the comments.
